The start of the American summer driving season supported U.S. crude prices on Tuesday, but persistent concerns about oversupply continued to fester. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures climbed above $50 per barrel early on Tuesday, before dipping back to $49.78 by 0655 GMT, down 2 cents from their last close. Demand in the United States for transport fuels tends to rise significantly as families visit friends and relatives or go on vacation during the Northern Hemisphere summer months.

Indian shares were largely flat on Tuesday, taking a breather after setting record closes in the previous sessions as investors booked profits in recent outperformers such as ITC Ltd, while the arrival of monsoon rains kept the sentiment upbeat. The monsoon, which delivers about 70 percent of India's annual rainfall, arrived at the southern Kerala coast on Tuesday, in line with forecasts, a weather office source said, brightening the outlook for higher farm output and robust economic growth. The arrival of rains bolstered optimism about the economy ahead of the launch of the national goods and services tax (GST) later this year, but analysts said extensive gains in Indian shares blunted the monsoon's impact on markets.

The Wall Street Journal on Sunday said Goldman paid 31 cents on the dollar for bonds issued by state oil company PDVSA that mature in 2022, or around $865 million, citing five people familiar with the transaction. "Goldman Sachs' financial lifeline to the regime will serve to strengthen the brutal repression unleashed against the hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans peacefully protesting for political change in the country," wrote Julio Borges in a letter to Goldman Sachs President Lloyd Blankfein.

At around 30 percent, India has one of the highest basic corporate tax rates in the world. Russia's new jetliner, which conducted its maiden flight on Sunday, may have a hard time challenging the sales duopoly of Boeing and Airbus, but it does point the way to radical changes in how they could be building jets in the future. The MS-21, a new single aisle airliner produced by Russia's United Aircraft Corporation, is the first passenger plane borne aloft by lightweight carbon-composite wings built without a costly pressurised oven called an autoclave. The manufacturing process provides a test for a technology already being assessed by Western rivals, who are looking for cheaper and faster ways to build some of their aircaft with composites, according to aerospace executives and suppliers.

Gold hit its highest level since May 1 on Friday at $1,269.50 an ounce, as nervousness over U.S. President Donald Trump's negotiations with other world leaders at the G7 summit prompted investors to buy bullion as an alternative to nominally higher-risk assets such as shares. "Potential for prices is limited right now, but with the news from the G7 meeting and the weaker dollar, the gold price has gone up," said LBBW analyst Thorsten Proettel. Gold is highly sensitive to rising U.S. rates, which increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion, while boosting the dollar, in which it is priced.

New Delhi, May 29 (IANS) A modest slowdown is likely in India's growth with the GDP expected to fall to 6.8 per cent in 2016-17 as a result of temporary disruption caused by the government's demonetisation initiative, the World Bank said on Monday.
